    Get PDF
In a world concerned with the coronavirus pandemic, many governments do not know how to control the disease. Although there are several technologies that generate citizen data, transparency, and privacy are very important to ensure social engagement and more effectiveness in fighting the virus. This article analyzed some applications that contact tracing people or inform them about the disease. We selected the applications based on how they captured data, privacy issues, citizen participation, and the main challenges faced. Later, we created the app journey map to compare them and discovered the most used technology is Bluetooth, and the apps often have open source. However, these initiatives bring superficial insights and need to integrate with more complex data

Spinal cord injuries are one of the most traumatic situations with a major impact on a person's quality of life. This type of injury have a extremely impact in the performance of daily life activities not only due to motor alterations but also due to the appearance of neuropathic pain Throughout the rehabilitation process the evaluation and intervention methodologies are not very systematic and are not personalized. Thus, to bridge this gap, the VR4NeuroPain was developed a technology that associates virtual reality with a glove "GNeuroPathy". The glove "GNeuroPathy" allows the collection of physiological parameters, namely to identify the electrodermic activity (EDA) while the patient carries out activities in an immersive environment. The main objective of this article is to present the validation process of the "GNeuroPathy" in clinical context. "GNeuroPathy" was applied to a group of 17 individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury. The results showed that "GNeuroPathy" is easy to apply and is suitable for comfort and texture. Data were also collected from EDA and it was found that there is a significant difference in signal amplitude in patients with low and high functionality.preprintpublishe

    Get PDF
Bearing in mind that the improvement of sustainable logistics activities tend to reduce social, environmental and economic impacts, models for measuring the level of sustainability as a support tool in decision making are increasingly relevant to the process of identifying companies/departments, which need sustainable best practice in order to mitigate costs or increase profit. The objective of the research is to analyze the performance of sustainability logistics in departments of three companies in the electronic segment. As a methodology to develop the research, a sustainable analysis is carried out using a Fuzzy inferences model, in order to consolidate an expert agent, who is able to measure or indicate the level of sustainability performance in the Human Resources (HR) departments. Patrimony and Information Technology (IT), the data set for analysis and inference of the input and output variables are in line with the characteristics of activities and practices performed in each department. As a result, it was possible to identify an influence of the “Priority” variable as a function of “Performance”, in addition, company 1 in the electronic segment presented a performance of 87.6 for HR, 88.1 for IT and 65.5 for Equity with the level of “Performance” in Sustainability

FONTES DE FINANCIAMENTO - Este estudo teve financiamento da Fundação Ciência e Tecnologia através da Bolsa de Doutoramento SFRH / BD /44042 / 2008 da primeira autora. A investigação teve, também, apoio da FCT, através do projecto POCTI/0068/2003.Objective: To present the results of the first application of the new technology - Vertebral Metrics - the analysis of the 3D position of the vertex of each spinous process in pregnant women. Material and Methods: The Vertebral Metrics was applied to women without associated pathology in four stages of pregnancy (12, 20, 32, 37 weeks gestation). We applied univariate linear models. Results: We found that the differences that occur during pregnancy are more significant at the position y (anteroposterior). It was found also that there is a positive correlation between the biomechanical position of the vertex of each of the vertebrae with the homologous position of rest. Discussion/Conclusion: Through Vertebral Metrics innovative results could be obtained in analyzing biomechanics of the spine. A device that has different applications can be easily adopted in areas such as orthopedics, neurosurgery, pediatrics and rehabilitation. It should also be noted that this instrument is not exhausted in the sample of this research because it can be further applied to the general populationpublishersversionpublishe

Beating heart partial ventriculectomy in dogs

After valve endocardiosis, dilated cardiomyopathy is the most diagnosed cardiac affection in dogs. Sometimes this disease is unresponsible to medical therapy, in this way surgery becomes necessary to its correction. Unfortunately, dogs do not support cardiopulmonary bypass because its tendency in microtrombus formation in the capillary vessels of the lung circulation. Due to this condition, another surgical alternatives were developed, in order to correct the increase in ventricle size, as the ventricle plication or partial ventriculectomy with the inflow occlusion. However, this kind of technique has its complications, as well the ventricle plication. In plication, a part of necrotic heart tissue still remains, and if the necrosis does not happen, that portion of myocardium keeps its oxygen consumption, leading to heart failure. The partial ventriculectomy with the inflow occlusion is time dependent. For its execution it means that the surgeon gets only four minutes to perform the resection of the dilated ventricle and then suture the remaining defect after the inflow occlusion. The aim of this study is to develop a new technique of heart size reduction, called by the authors Beating Heart Partial Ventriculectomy

Analysis of body mass index, weight loss and progression of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis

    Get PDF
Background: Nintedanib is an approved therapy for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Some patients treated with nintedanib experience weight loss. Exploratory data suggest that low body mass index or weight loss are associated with worse outcomes in patients with IPF. We investigated whether BMI at baseline or weight loss over 52 weeks was associated with FVC decline, or influenced the effect of nintedanib, in patients with IPF. Methods: Using pooled data from the two INPULSIS trials, we analysed the rate of decline in FVC (mL/yr) over 52 weeks in patients treated with nintedanib and placebo in subgroups by baseline BMI ( 5%) using random coefficient regression. Results: In the placebo group, the mean rate of FVC decline over 52 weeks was numerically greater in patients with lower baseline BMI (− 283.3 [SE 22.4], − 207.9 [20.9] and − 104.5 [21.4] in patients with BMI 5% than ≤5% weight loss over 52 weeks (− 312.7 [SE 32.2] versus − 199.5 [SE 14.4] mL/year). Nintedanib reduced the rate of FVC decline versus placebo in both subgroups by weight loss, with a greater treatment effect in patients with > 5% weight loss (interaction p = 0.0008). The adverse event profile of nintedanib was similar across subgroups. Conclusions: In patients with IPF, lower BMI and weight loss may be associated with faster decline in FVC. Nintedanib reduces the rate of FVC decline both in patients who lose weight on treatment and those who do not. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov; Nos. Mammals are threatened worldwide, with 26% of all species being includedin the IUCN threatened categories. This overall pattern is primarily associatedwith habitat loss or degradation, and human persecution for terrestrial mam-mals, and pollution, open net fishing, climate change, and prey depletion formarine mammals. Mammals play a key role in maintaining ecosystems func-tionality and resilience, and therefore information on their distribution is cru-cial to delineate and support conservation actions. MAMMALS INPORTUGAL is a publicly available data set compiling unpublishedgeoreferenced occurrence records of 92 terrestrial, volant, and marine mam-mals in mainland Portugal and archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira thatincludes 105,026 data entries between 1873 and 2021 (72% of the data occur-ring in 2000 and 2021). The methods used to collect the data were: live obser-vations/captures (43%), sign surveys (35%), camera trapping (16%),bioacoustics surveys (4%) and radiotracking, and inquiries that represent lessthan 1% of the records. The data set includes 13 types of records: (1) burrowsjsoil moundsjtunnel, (2) capture, (3) colony, (4) dead animaljhairjskullsjjaws, (5) genetic confirmation, (6) inquiries, (7) observation of live animal (8),observation in shelters, (9) photo trappingjvideo, (10) predators dietjpelletsjpine cones/nuts, (11) scatjtrackjditch, (12) telemetry and (13) vocalizationjecholocation. The spatial uncertainty of most records ranges between 0 and100 m (76%). Rodentia (n=31,573) has the highest number of records followedby Chiroptera (n=18,857), Carnivora (n=18,594), Lagomorpha (n=17,496),Cetartiodactyla (n=11,568) and Eulipotyphla (n=7008). The data setincludes records of species classified by the IUCN as threatened(e.g.,Oryctolagus cuniculus[n=12,159],Monachus monachus[n=1,512],andLynx pardinus[n=197]). We believe that this data set may stimulate thepublication of other European countries data sets that would certainly contrib-ute to ecology and conservation-related research, and therefore assisting onthe development of more accurate and tailored conservation managementstrategies for each species.
